Teeth Whitening

Teeth whitening, also known as bleaching, is a common dental procedure that dates back to the ancient Egyptians. They applied a mixture of ground pumice and wine vinegar to the affected areas with a simple toothbrush.

There are many different reasons people require teeth whitening. Discolouration occurs due to ageing, coffee (a big issue for Melbourne people!), tea, red wine, tobacco, certain types of medication, excessive amounts of fluoride and the consumption of tetracycline as a child. All of these can contribute to your smile not looking as white and bright as it should.

Teeth whitening is a simple process. Whitening products contain one of two tooth bleaches (hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide). These bleaches break stains into smaller pieces, which makes the color less concentrated and your teeth brighter.

The most common reasons for teeth to get yellow or stained are

1. Using tobacco.
2. Drinking dark-colored liquids such as coffee, cola, tea and red wine.
3. Not taking good care of your teeth.
